Pick-IT : NHIS Registrations and Health Screening Exercise

In March 2018, ahead of the launch of the Pick-IT sorting center, our project  partners WIEGO supported the waste pickers in Tema Newtown and the Kpone Landfill to register for National Health Insurance Scheme. This proved to be a very important entry activity and good step to building trust and relationship with those who often feel marginalized. 152 out of 362 waste pickers were registered that day and the project hopes to register the rest in months to follow. Pick-it had a successful heath screening after the NHIS registration for the waste pickers groups in Tema Newtown and the Kpone landfill. The project aspires to develop a mechanism where the health insurance can be renewed year-on-year for waste pickers.
