Launch of Ghana Recycling Initiatives by Private Enterprises (GRIPE)
GRIPE Ghana Recycling Initiative by Private Enterprises (GRIPE) is a coalition of eight prominent companies in Ghana: Fan Milk Limited, Dow Chemical West Africa Limited, Guinness Ghana, Nestlé Ghana Limited, PZ Cussons, The Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Ghana, Unilever Ghana Limited and Voltic (GH) Limited. The aim of this initiative is to work with the Ghanaian government and other stakeholders to integrate sustainable solutions to manage plastic waste. To achieve this goal the organization focuses on research, advocacy, innovation and multi-stakeholder collaboration.
Since its formation in 2017, GRIPE has been involved with several projects. Immediately after its conception GRIPE sponsored advocacy and educational projects, like a walk in Korle-Bu to sensitize the public on the need to segregate and manage plastic in collaboration with a school in the area.
This April, GRIPE has launched a new project to validate in Ghana a recycling technology that turns plastics into modified concrete materials to be used in construction. This initiative is in its first stages in collaboration with EAP Consult Ltd and the Building and Road Research Institute (CSIR-BRRI).
GRIPE is also a major stakeholder in the Pick-it project itself. Not only Fan Milk Limited, a founding member of GRIPE, is co-leading and co-implementing the Pick-it project but the recycling innovations supported by GRIPE will help securing second life solutions for plastics collected by waste pickers and segregated at the sorting center.
