Building the Capacity of Waste Pickers!
Updated: Apr 3, 2019
Environment360 in collaboration with Giz and the German state of North Rhine-Westfalia, organized a 3-day creative capacity building seminar for 25 female waste pickers in Old Fadamma, Accra.
The main goal of the CCB training was to educate and equip waste pickers with a skill of using a design process in finding solutions to their problems. Waste pickers present at the seminar were grouped and tasked to develop solutions to problems associated with the retrieval of plastic recyclables from their communities.
They were also enlightened on the Giz take- back project and the significance of their role in the project. Waste pickers will recover PET bottles from the community into various collection points after which Environment360 would collect the bottles and transport to recycling firms.
This project will serve as an additional source of income for these waste pickers, who already recover other recyclable plastics such as LDPE Films (Water Sachet) from the communities in which they live.
The PET take-back project which is funded by the German state of North Rhine-Westfalia is being implemented by Environment360 to work with informal waste pickers and scrap dealers to recover PET bottles in Accra and Kumasi. The project commenced in October 2018 and will continue throughout 2019.
